“Ambient Sensing” Technology to Bolster Future Arlo Security Products

Arlo Technologies recently announced a strategic partnership agreement with Origin AI to include the company’s AI Sensing technology in Arlos’ portfolio. Under the agreement, Arlo will have exclusive worldwide rights to market and sell Origin AI’s TruShield and Allos Wi-Fi Motion products.

Additionally, Arlo plans to integrate Origin AI Sensing technologies into future offerings, complementing Arlo’s suite of advanced security solutions powered by Arlo Intelligence — from AI-assisted motion detection to indoor/outdoor video monitoring and professional monitoring with video verification.

What Makes Origin AI So Special?

Origin AI states its sensing AI delivers Verified Human Presence detection by using radio frequency (RF) signals emitted by existing Wi-Fi devices in homes or businesses. This also gets referred to as Wi-Fi Motion, Wireless AI and Ambient Sensing in other circles.

According to Origin, Wi-Fi signals present in the home “bounce and break” off humans moving through the space. The company’s AI can detect the breaks in these patterns to provide what it claims to be incredibly accurate assessments of movement in a space, all without the need to use sensors like in traditional security setups.

Technology currently gets used for motion and fall detection, however, according to Origin’s website, the technology is sensitive enough to be able to detect breathing rates in home occupants by tracking chest movements.

Lightapalooza took place in late February, and the growth of the event has mirrored the rapid ascension lighting fixtures and controls.

This capability, according to Origin helps increase accuracy and reduce false alarms and lends itself to applications in both home security, as well as aging-in-place environments.

An Interesting Use for Home Wi-Fi

While the idea of us swimming in RF waves might make some people’s skin crawl (it certainly doesn’t make me feel much better), Origin instead seems to see it as a visual aid akin to infrared or thermal detection.

As much as some may try to limit exposure in a sense, Wi-Fi has become a ubiquitous part of the home and commercial and environment, especially in projects where integrators are commonly working. It’s to the point of familiarity where the modern-day burglar has begun using Wi-Fi jammers to bypass security systems.

Just how Origin’s AI might be affected by such a method of intrusion is unknown, however, as is how it may be incorporated into Arlo’s own offerings with further details about Arlo’s partnership with Origin AI will be shared later this year.
