Being no strangers to developing outdoor projection systems, Ledcom, Inc. stepped onto the project of this Beverly Hills home, dubbed “Backyard Movie Oasis,” prepared. With a beautifully fenced terrace on the property, the client sought to further build out their outdoor living space with a outdoor theater for nightly activities.
Specifically, the client wanted a projector-based theater system, as an LED video wall was deemed to be to cost prohibitive for the agreed-upon budget. While a simple request, the true challenge of the project came in the limitations of the structure these systems were meant to occupy.
“Typically we would use a front throw projector onto an ALR screen,” noted Lonnie Elbax of Ledcom, Inc. “However in this circumstance there was no good option to affix a permanent front throw projector.”
Scouring through potential solutions, the team eventually came across Epson’s LS800 short-throw projector. In addition to its performance capabilities, the team noticed one other feature of the device that put it on this project’s equipment short list: the fact that it was capable of being mounted effectively upside down as a rear projector.
“We spoke to our contact at Epson and drew up a crude mockup. They reviewed the drawings and seemed very confident this application would work,” Elbax explained.
As a custom integrator, lighting is in demand. Effective communication, education and showcasing the value proposition of LED light fixtures in conjunction with integrative control systems are the keys to overcoming challenges and closing sales in this specialized market.

“Ultimately since we could not find a mount that would allow a ceiling mount of a short throw projector, we went to the metal shop and fabricated a mount to safely hold the projector.”
The team also ended up being fortunate enough to find an outdoor-rated ALR screen that can achieve rear projection. They then tied both the audio and projection systems into the Control4 platform to provide the client with a more simplified control setup when settling down for movie night.
The result, Elbax stated was an outdoor cinema capable of withstanding the regional rigors of California while providing an enchanting viewing experience for movie night under the stars.
