Set within Orange County, California, the owners of this 7,500-square-foot coastal contemporary estate sought to create a home environment where everything could be reigned in to their liking through effortless control. Daisy Orange County—formerly Brilliant AV—was brought on to provide the home automation solution by builder Legacy CDM alongside Brooke Wagner Design.

After listening to the family’s needs, the team at Daisy decided to develop a full-scale home automation system for the property that leveraged the Control4 platform. The completed system would grant complete control over nearly every subsystem in the home, including thermostats, motorized shades, garage doors, entertainment, lighting, alarms and surveillance.
“Simplicity was essential, so we designed the interfaces to present control options by floor and room,” Daisy Orange County technology advisor Steven Ras explains. “There are also commands that affect the entire house, and controls for individual systems like HVAC remain quickly and easily accessible.”

Specially engraved keypads, touchscreens, handheld remotes and even smartphones offer multiple points for interfacing with the home’s systems. Even complex routines, such as one that settles the home into night-time mode by dimming lights, lowering shades, closing garage doors, arming alarms and lowering thermostats, have been streamlined to a single button press.

Inside the coastal estate’s secluded home theater, a 200-inch projection screen paired with a high-powered projector and Dolby Atmos surround-sound system create an immersive cinematic experience that Daisy touts rival any contemporary theater.
Plush acoustical treatments, as well as custom artwork, provide a design aesthetic dialed in with some of the family’s favorite movies and continue to evoke that feeling of build-up towards watching a movie at a commercial cinema.
The system also included a preprogrammed theater sequence that, when activated, will dim the overhead lights, turn on the soft step lights and power up the AV systems for movie night.
“These elements are just as crucial to the comfort and performance of the space as the technology itself,” Ras says. “That’s why we include them as part of our comprehensive theater solutions.”

Elsewhere in the house, Samsung’s The Frame TVs are paired with hidden Roku players for easy access to streaming content. Audio, meanwhile, is distributed through discreet, flush-mounted Sonance ceiling speakers, which also help broadcast music and doorbell chimes via a central Control4 system to any of the 15 audio zones in the home.
This extends even to the outdoor spaces at the estate, where a coastal cabana is fitted with full surround-sound speakers that have been weather-proofed to withstand the elements. There are also underwater speakers installed in the pool, which helps immerse guests in the sound even as they’re diving beneath the waters.
Through the Control4 platform, the homeowners can also monitor any point in the property that has a Luma surveillance camera installed. Six video intercom stations positioned throughout the home act as hubs for direct access to live video footage.
