Smart thermostat manufacturer ecobee is launching Home Energy Reports, a new feature in the company’s app designed to help customers understand the direct impact of their HVAC system’s energy use and make more informed decisions about their home with detailed reports on their systems’ energy consumption.
According to the Toronto-based company, Home Energy Reports will be available to all ecobee smart thermostat customers, providing detailed reports on energy usage from a home’s HVAC systems. This can help identify potential issues and compare energy consumption to others in their community.
The company says Home Energy Reports, which will begin rolling out as a free software update in the ecobee app next month, can show customers how their energy usage compares to others in their state or province. An energy efficiency rank gives customers insight into their system’s relative energy efficiency. This can help identify the potential for energy savings and encourage more sustainable energy decisions, the company hopes.
If ecobee alerts a homeowner about a concern with their heating and cooling system, they will now be able to review HVAC runtime, temperature and humidity data all in one place to help assess if there is an issue and accelerate time to resolve it with support, the company says.
Earlier this year, the company also released an update to its smart thermostats that would alert homeowners and automatically lower temperatures in the event of grid instability that could lead to power outages.
Lightapalooza took place in late February, and the growth of the event has mirrored the rapid ascension lighting fixtures and controls.
The announcements follow a recent string of updates from predominantly consumer-level smart home companies focused on greater energy monitoring and control with Ikea now trialing an energy monitoring feature on its platform and Samsung recently partnering with Tesla to gain greater insight into systems hooked up to a Powerwall.
“With Home Energy Reports, we’re providing our customers with the ability to easily observe and monitor the heating and cooling activity in their homes,” said Bryan Hurren, vice president of product and design at ecobee, in a statement.
“From monitoring their home’s energy usage to determining how efficient their heating and cooling system is, we are helping homeowners gain a better understanding of their HVAC system and make informed decisions about their home.”
