Flexible Design and Versatile Control Help a Multipurpose Family Room Shine

The two major design goals for this award-winning multipurpose family room design by Gramophone were to make it flexible to the needs of and easy to use for a younger set of parents with children to look after. To that end, the couple looked to integrated lighting and HVAC controls, and a mesmerizing home theater system as a must.

Working alongside Gramophone on the project, in-house designer Stephanie Twarowski, was tasked with finding ways to keep the furniture placement easily reconfigurable as the space needed to serve as a movie theater, a playroom for the clients’ young children and a guest space.

All the furnishings can be moved as needed to make room for playtime, notes Leticia Blundi, Gramophone’s eCommerce marketing manager in their awards submission. The integrator’s Design/Build team designed, produced, and managed the project from start to finish.

In creating the home theater system, the team leveraged a Sony 4K laser projector aimed at a Stewart Filmscreen 138” 2.35:1 screen. The audio is supported by Totem architectural speakers and JL Audio subwoofers alongside a Marantz AV receiver and AudioControl amplification. A Kaleidescape movie server helps in storing all the family’s entertainment.

The Electrical team deployed also integrated lighting and lighting control systems from Control4 to assist the multipurpose design of the space.

The Future of Digital Lighting & Control

As a custom integrator, lighting is in demand. Effective communication, education and showcasing the value proposition of LED light fixtures in conjunction with integrative control systems are the keys to overcoming challenges and closing sales in this specialized market.

“Theater, lighting, & HVAC components were integrated for a sleek modern look. From recessing the projector screen to building the projector into the bulkhead, to installing mud-in HVAC supplies and returns and LED lighting — all of these considerations add a high level of detail,” Blundi enthuses.
