Google Will Be Adding Gemini AI to Its Smart TVs Later This Year

Both LG and Samsung have said that their smart TV operating systems will begin including Microsoft’s Copilot AI tool in a bid to make their TVs smarter, and now Google is doing the same with its Google TV platform and Gemini.

How Will Gemini Work in Google TVs?

At CES 2025, the company shared a preview of new AI capabilities for Google TV that use Gemini models designed to make interacting with a Google TV-powered display more intuitive.

According to Google, the Gemini integration will allow users to have a more natural conversation with their TV, making searching through media easier. Users can also ask questions, with videos in the results for added context.

Users can also create customized artwork, control smart home devices while the TV is in ambient mode and get an overview of news headlines.

According to Google, these features will be rolling out later this year on “select” Google TV devices. It’s unclear if this means smart TVs powered by the company’s operating system, Google TV streaming devices, or both.

Is This the End of Google Assistant?

It’s unclear if Gemini will fully replace Google Assistant, which remains the tool used to control smart home devices and search for content on Google-powered TVs.

Gemini is Google’s generative AI model that the company has been infusing throughout its product portfolio. While applications began in the company’s enterprise and productivity tools, Google appears ready to begin bringing Gemini to its consumer-facing products such as Google Home and Google TV.

Microsoft’s Copilot similarly began rolling out to its enterprise suite of tools, but the integration into smart TV operating systems from Samsung and LG signals that Microsoft is also willing to begin expanding its generative AI offering to the consumer technology space.

Samsung says it will also work with Google to expand the AI capabilities of its smart TV platform. A growing use case for generative AI on smart TVs is the ability to create AI-generated images to transform the TV into a piece of art when not playing video content. According to what we know, all three smart TV platform providers will offer this capability.
