Lighting Boss: Harnessing Different Color Temperatures in Outdoor Lighting

The outdoor lighting industry has always been a phenomenal one and continues to grow in popularity. Landscape and architectural lighting create a visual destination for your clients, so it’s important to understand the key fundamentals of proper outdoor lighting design including color temperatures and how to use them effectively.

Our perception of the color of light is influenced by the Kelvin spectrum. For instance, warmer light with a lower Kelvin temperature tends to create a cozy or intimate atmosphere. While cooler light, with a higher Kelvin temperature, tends to appear more energizing or refreshing.

Also, CRI or Color Rendering Index is another important factor in determining the quality of light. The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100. A score of 90 is considered excellent, while a score below 80 is considered poor. Understanding the quality of light you are using as well as Kelvin temperatures are very important when it comes to your lighting design.

Artfully done outdoor lighting with the use of the high-quality lights and the correct Kelvin color temperature, you can enhance your client’s architecture and foliage without overpowering it, so be sure to educate yourself.
