The home theater has changed, and none know that better than Sony, who, as CEDIA Expo approaches, has just about every home theater solution from video walls to projection coming with them to the show. To discuss the direction of the category, as well as Sony’s latest innovations, CE Pro Senior Editor Nick Boever sits down with Kathleen Thomas, Head of Custom Integration Sales at Sony.
A big component of the company’s show presence this year is its new RGB display technology, which Thomas says they spent much of the past year introducing dealers to. She describes RGB as a major advancement because it expands the possibilities for display size, brightness, low-light detail and color reproduction.
According to Thomas, RGB provides roughly twice the color volume of traditional Mini LED and four times that of OLED, while allowing displays to reproduce a broader range of colors more accurately.
Of course, that’s not all, as the company released its Theater Trio this year, meant to coincide with its larger TV sizes. Sony demonstrated the Theater Trio with its 115-inch TV during its roadshows, and Thomas says the solution can also be paired with battery-powered wireless rear speakers and wireless subwoofers, making it suitable for flexible installations such as vacation homes.
Beyond that, she says sees potential for more creative residential applications with video walls as the technology has matured. However, Thomas stresses that video walls aren’t universally the best choice when it comes to building out a home theater display. They remain expensive, can create audio-integration challenges because speakers cannot simply be placed behind them, and there are situations where projectors remain the better solution.
Despite all the attention surrounding RGB displays and video walls, though, Thomas says Sony remains committed to front projection, though. Thomas acknowledges that projectors are no longer necessarily the default solution for every home theater but says they continue to offer unique advantages.
