Roku Is Turning Its Ultra Streaming Device into a Figurehead for the Smart Home

Over the years, the Roku Ultra has delivered a wealth of digital content into living rooms and home theaters. The popular technology company boasts that its solutions provide a simple way to upgrade aging or smart TVs with ease, and the company’s newly announced 2024 Roku Ultra is said to be its most powerful player to date.

According to Roku, its latest solution delivers lightning-fast performance, cinematic Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, quicker app loading, and a wealth of features. 

At the heart of Roku Ultra is an all-new quad core processor purpose-built for cinematic streaming. This chip supports all the latest in streaming video, including 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos for immersive theater-quality picture and audio. 

The global company points out the new Roku Ultra processes 30% faster than other Roku players through its more powerful CPU, and as a result it loads content quicker, navigation is more fluid, and streaming feels snappier, which Roku asserts provides a big upgrade from your smart TV that’s starting to feel outdated. Plus, as a HDMI 2.1 streaming player, Roku Ultra offers Quick Media Switching (QMS) to offer delivering judder-free transitions between different refresh rates or content sources on premium TVs. 

Roku Ultra Incorporates Latest Technologies

Not only does the Roku Ultra serve as the focal point for modern AV content, the company states its newest product is also smarter. The new solution employs advanced machine learning to anticipate which app homeowners are going to open next and it opens that app supplement loading times.

Roku Ultra comes with Wi-Fi 6 that will help reduce lag and keep everything running smoothly. This means quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and a more reliable internet connection. In addition to its wireless networking capabilities, the product also offers wired Ethernet connectivity options.

Roku claims that its devices are user-friendly and deliver an innovative, intuitive viewing experience. Roku says for example homeowners can click into immersive destinations based on popular genres, such as Live TV, sports, home, food, and more, where users can browse and discover new content. Or, users can continue watching shows they’ve paused, with features like Continue Watching, and save entertainment for later with the Roku Save List. The Roku home screen can also be customized based around users’ interests. 

Moving on the the topic of interfaces, Roku emphasizes that its remotes are designed to be an extension to the TV viewing experience. Now the Roku Ultra comes bundled with what the company says its its best remote yet: The Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition). 

This remote includes offers features such as TV power and volume controls, hands-free voice commands, rechargeability, and a lost remote finder. It also introduces long-awaited features like backlit buttons, convenient USB-C charging, and two new buttons—Quick Launch and Live TV Guide. 

With Quick Launch users can see personalized shortcuts including their go-to apps, their favorite voice commands, and switching the captions on and off from their TV screens. Roku explains the new Guide button offers instant access to Roku’s Live TV Channel Guide, with more than 400 free live linear channels, all available from a single click. 

Roku Sets Sights on Growing Its Smart Home Network

Supporting a more inclusive smart home experience, the 2024 Roku Ultra integrates seamlessly with the company’s smart home offerings. Roku suggest that through its Smart Home capabilities users can set the vibes for their home theaters to enjoy their entertainment while keeping an eye on the rest of their homes. 

Examples the company cites is the Roku Doorbell Camera. This Roku product will pop up right on users screens to show them who is at their door. Roku’s security cameras also allow users to check on their children in another room, and all of these functions are available by clicking into the Roku Smart Home app on their TVs to see all of their camera feeds. Moreover, the company notes, homeowners can simply say “Hey Roku, show me the kids’ room.” 

Other Roku smart home products include the Roku Light Strips & Bulbs that provide the ability to set and control a home’s lighting conditions.

Roku Ultra is available for $99.99 in the U.S. and Canada starting immediately on the Roku website and major retailers in the coming weeks.
