Roku is launching new updates to its Smart Home lineup, enhancing home monitoring capabilities directly on Roku-powered TVs and devices including a surveillance camera feed cycle feature on a Roku TV, camera notifications on the TV, a picture-in-picture view of camera feeds, and the ability to monitor camera feeds on the web.
Roku had previously announced many of these features, but they are now available to users with a Roku Smart Home camera.
However, the picture-in-picture feature, which allows users to pin a surveillance camera feed to the TV screen while they stream content, was newly announced. This feature is compatible with all Roku indoor and outdoor wired cameras, and is available on most 4K Roku players and TVs, the company says.
According to the company, also now available is the Camera Carousel, which automatically cycles through each camera feed on a TV, using motion detection to display the camera that is capturing motion. Users can now get notifications on camera events on their Roku-powered TVs by turning them on in the Roku app.
In addition, Roku is now allowing users to monitor all camera feeds from a web browser at cameras.roku.com.
Lightapalooza took place in late February, and the growth of the event has mirrored the rapid ascension lighting fixtures and controls.
According to the company, these features are available for all Roku Smart Home camera and doorbell products, including the Floodlight Camera, Video Doorbell, Wire-free Video Doorbell and Chime, Indoor 360 Camera, Outdoor Wire-free Camera, Indoor and Outdoor Wired Camera SE, and the new Indoor and Outdoor Wired Cameras.
This trend of smart TV integration with other smart home devices is not new. In fact, most major consumer-facing platforms with both TV and smart home businesses are doing the same to some degree, including Google TV/Google Home, Amazon Fire/Alexa, Apple TV/Homekit, and more. The selling point here is that this gives users the ability to control their smart home systems on what is likely the most frequently used screen in the home.
