Samsung and Tesla have officially launched an integration that allows Tesla Energy customers to manage their home’s energy use, storage and production from the SmartThings app.
The integration, first announced at CES 2024 in January, is now finally available, enabling the SmartThings app to display information about energy production, storage and usage for Tesla products like the Powerwall, Solar Inverter and Wall Connector.
According to Samsung, this allows users to receive home energy notifications from the Tesla app on a Samsung TV, providing more access to solar production, backup duration, and home energy usage.
In addition, Tesla notifications on Samsung devices will give users information on energy consumption in their home to help them make informed decisions on backup duration and lead homeowners to turn off high-energy usage devices.
Owners of the Tesla Powerwall will also be able to get alerts through their Samsung smart TVs and mobile devices in addition to the Tesla app. During an outage, the Powerwall will automatically detect it and begin powering the home with stored backup energy. If a storm is forecasted, a Storm Watch feature will automatically charge the Powerwall to prepare for an outage.
Lightapalooza took place in late February, and the growth of the event has mirrored the rapid ascension lighting fixtures and controls.
Users can also enable notifications in the SmartThings app to get notifications in the app or on a Samsung TV if a storm is forecasted in the area or if their site goes off-grid. Users can then take action to avoid high-energy devices.
Automation rules can be created for Tesla products, allowing homeowners to reduce power when the Powerwall switches of Off-Grid mode or prioritizing charging for backup power.
In January, Samsung credited Tesla’s open APIs on its products for the integrations.
“At Tesla we are excited to add capability to our products to interact with other intelligent devices and software in customers’ homes. We recently published FleetAPI, allowing developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar and Wall Connector in addition to our vehicles,” said Drew Baglino, Tesla.
“We are pleased that Samsung has chosen to be an early developer, given its leading position in consumer smart home technology. Customers will be able to view the status of their grid connectivity across multiple devices and intelligently control home loads to extend their Powerwall energy when off grid.”
