Sharp to Begin Making TiVo OS-Powered TVs for U.S. Market

TiVo OS is officially coming to the U.S. market with parent company Xperi announcing a partnership with Sharp to make TVs that run on the company’s TiVo-based operating system.

Sharp’s Partnership with TiVo Previously Hinted At

TiVo OS’ introduction to the U.S. market has been a long time coming, with more than 30 brands in European markets– including Bush, Daewoo, Digihome, Panasonic, Sharp, Telefunken, and Vestelas–currently using the smart TV operating system. Xperi previously said it would announce U.S. smart TVs powered by TiVo by the end of 2024, so this news comes just a bit late, but in time for CES 2025, where the company will be exhibiting at  West Hall #5840.

Xperi and Sharp say the TV models running on TiVo OS will be available as early as next month and will feature an UHD and HDR 55-inch QLED screen, as well as Dolby Atmos and three HDMI ports.

TiVo OS Said to Excel as Content Aggregate Platform

Xperi markets TiVo OS as a smart TV platform that excels at content management and discovery, aggregating content from streaming services, linear TV, and sports content to make it easier for consumers to find what they want to watch.

The company says its search and recommendation capabilities use algorithms that learn from a user’s viewing habits and provides personalized suggestions based on a user’s preferences. This approach aims to make it easier for consumers to find what they want to watch, which is sometimes a pain point in the smart TV space.

In addition, the platform offers “natural voice navigation” for select TV models, enabling consumers to use their voice to search for and access content and rely less on remotes or smartphone apps.

Like other smart TV systems, TiVo OS supports a wide range of streaming services and apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, and more.

Second TiVo Partnership May Be in Works After Sharp

Xperi has previously hinted that it is in discussions with multiple U.S. TV manufacturers to make smart TVs powered by TiVo OS, so a second U.S. TV partner could be on the way.

Ben Maughan, general manager of the smart TV platform for Xperi, in a statement called the operating system’s U.S. introduction a significant milestone.

“Our deep understanding of viewer needs and behaviors has allowed us to develop a platform that elevates the TV experience by making it more intuitive. We’re excited to bring an enhanced TV experience to Sharp’s consumers in America,” Maughan said.

For Sharp, this move helps the company gain ground in the U.S. against industry giants Samsung, LG, Sony, and others, said Jim Sanduski, president of Sharp Home Electronics Company of America, in a statement.

“We have partnered with TiVo to provide a truly independent platform that allows our consumers to find, watch and enjoy content easily,” said Jim Sanduski, President of Sharp Home Electronics Company of America. “As we look to gain more foothold in the U.S. television market, partnering with credible and trustworthy businesses such as TiVo to provide an experience that aligns with our consumers needs, is crucial. TiVo’s unbiased, personalized and content-first approach is exactly the type of operating system our consumers are looking for.”
