The Honeywell Home X2S Smart Thermostat Makes its Debut at CES

Resideo Technologies has introduced the new Honeywell Home X2S smart thermostat at CES 2025. ENERGY STAR-rated and Matter- certified, the device will be available at home improvement retailers this spring, according to Resideo.

The Honeywell Home X2S Cost, Features and Availability

According to Resideo, the Honeywell Home X2S smart thermostat will be available in U.S. and Canadian retail stores for $79.99 (U.S. MSRP), with the company stating that it will be compatible with most HVAC systems and Internet routers (both 2.4 and 5 GHz).

The device will also be compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, with users being able to control the thermostat’s setpoints and schedules via Resideo’s First Alert app—Resideo’s ecosystem for connected Honeywell Home and First Alert branded solutions.

Beyond simple heating and cooling control, the device is also capable of monitoring humidity and air filter quality, with reminders being sent out through the app to inform users of when the filter needs to be replaced.

It also comes with a specialized wall-mounting plate that Resideo says will facilitate simple upgrades between devices.

Smart Thermostats Remain Go-To for Energy Savings

With energy costs on the rise, heating and cooling—which accounts for the greatest energy expenditure in the home—has entered into the crosshairs for areas of improvement. At the same time, with room temperature being a major factor in perceptions of “comfort,” home improvement specialists walk that fine line of frugal yet comfortable.

In the past, smart thermostats have acted as passive savers, but more recently, manufacturers have begun to make smart thermostats take a more active role in regulating energy consumption.

For example, the First Alert app enables an automatic away mode that detects when all users have left the house and delivers optimized energy savings until they return. Users can also enroll in energy management programs offered through their local utilities to greatly boost the functionality of the X2S.

Other manufacturers like ecobee have also begun incorporating energy monitoring/management capabilities into their devices. A recent update has even made it so that the device will lower HVAC usage during periods of grid instability to prevent outages.

CE Pros Still Hold an Active Role in Device Efficacy

Honeywell touts that on average, Honeywell Home thermostat users save on average 22% for heating and 17% on cooling for HVAC energy consumption. Of course, this is when using the recommended scheduling feature consistently, which, as most professionals will say, comes down to whether the homeowner is constantly tinkering with the settings.

That still leaves room for proactive education on the part of any professional installing the device. At the very least, it necessitates some handy management of expectations for the homeowner, because despite this being largely pitched as a DIY solution, Resideo acknowledges that roughly half of consumers prefer a professional to install their thermostat to be able to get the most out of the device.
