Given the extensive number of adults approaching retirement age that are still looking to live at home in their twilight years, there’s still a resounding lack of technological solutions on the market addressing aging in place setups. Enter Threshold Care, which is launching what it calls a noninvasive Wi-Fi sensing plug designed to give caregivers real-time motion insights without needing cameras or wearables.
Developing monitoring solutions for the generational care market, Threshold was founded by Jacob Loader, who himself experienced a scare with a loved one who was living in place. This experience prompted him to start Threshold, and since then, the company has worked on developing multiple commercial products that have gone on to win numerous CES Innovation Awards.
The company’s latest product, called Motion, is marketed as providing family members with insights into motion patterns on their aging loved ones without intruding on their privacy with cameras and other technology.
According to Threshold Care, Motion is aimed at the 48 million Americans who the AARP says care for aging loved ones that live independently. The product is marketed as a user-friendly and affordable solution that doesn’t require behavioral changes and protects a user’s privacy.
The plug-and-play device simply provides information about an individual’s motion patterns and allows their loved ones to act when needed while preserving the patient’s independence. The device uses advanced Wi-Fi sensing technology to detect motion by measuring disruptions in Wi-Fi signals.
Lightapalooza took place in late February, and the growth of the event has mirrored the rapid ascension lighting fixtures and controls.
According to Threshold Care, each Motion kit includes three smart plug sensors that can be placed in standard outlets throughout the home to create a comprehensive motion zone. These sensors communicate directly with the Wi-Fi router to provide real-time monitoring and insights on movement.
Caregivers can monitor motion patterns and access up to two weeks of motion data in the Threshold Care Mobile App, on Android and iOS. The app provides an interface for real-time monitoring and requires no ongoing maintenance, app check-ins, or training.
The Motion Wi-Fi Sensing Plug kit is USD 59.99 and available for purchase on Amazon and directly from the Threshold Care website.
“As life expectancy increases, so does the desire to age in place. Yet the growing need for non-intrusive, simple and accessible technology to ensure a loved one’s well-being has never been more urgent,” says Jacob Loader, managing director and co-founder of Threshold Care, in a statement. “Motion delivers a practical solution that empowers caregivers with information that helps answer the vital question, ‘Is my loved one okay right now?’ without compromising privacy. It’s technology that respects the individual while providing peace of mind to those who care for them.”
